Why the Best ISVs Don't Sell Products. They Build Ecosystems.

12 October 2026

From 27-29 October 2026, the Microsoft Dynamics community will gather in Paris for Directions EMEA 2026, bringing together ISVs, Microsoft partners, distributors, consultants, developers, and business leaders from across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The event has become one of the most important gatherings for organizations looking to innovate, collaborate, and grow within the Dynamics 365 Business Central ecosystem.

As I prepare to attend this year's event, I find myself reflecting on a question I hear repeatedly from software vendors across multiple markets: How do we scale?

Every ISV is searching for growth. They want to enter new markets, attract new customers, increase recurring revenue, and build sustainable businesses that continue to grow year after year. Yet despite having great products, many software companies struggle to move beyond a certain point. The challenge is rarely the technology. More often, it is the route to market.

For years, success was largely determined by having the best product, the best features, or the biggest development team. While those factors remain important, they are no longer enough on their own. Today's customers expect more than software. They want expertise, support, integration, industry knowledge, and trusted guidance that helps them achieve business outcomes.

This is why the most successful ISVs are no longer focused solely on selling products.

They are focused on building ecosystems.

An ecosystem is far more powerful than a traditional vendor-customer relationship. It brings together software vendors, implementation partners, consultants, distributors, marketplaces, technology providers, and customer communities that all contribute to a common goal. Rather than operating in isolation, these organizations create value together.

The result is a growth model that is more scalable, more sustainable, and significantly more effective than attempting to do everything alone.

The reality is that direct sales have limitations. Every new country requires local knowledge. Every new market requires trusted relationships. Every new customer brings implementation, training, and support requirements. Expanding into multiple territories means building teams, creating infrastructure, and developing expertise that can take years to establish.

Many ISVs discover that growth starts to slow as they attempt to manage all of this themselves.

Partnerships change that equation entirely.

A strong partner already understands the local market. They have established customer relationships and industry expertise. They know how to navigate regional business requirements and can provide implementation and support services that customers expect. Instead of building everything from the ground up, ISVs can leverage a network of partners to accelerate market entry and create immediate opportunities for growth.

This is where the Microsoft ecosystem provides a significant advantage.

Across Dynamics 365, Business Central, Azure, Microsoft 365, Security, Data, and AI, Microsoft has built one of the world's most extensive partner communities. Within this ecosystem, thousands of partners are already engaging customers, delivering projects, and helping organizations transform their businesses.

For ISVs, this creates an incredible opportunity.

Customers are already investing in Microsoft technology. Partners are already working to solve business challenges. Consultants are already identifying gaps where specialized solutions can add value. The demand exists. The question is whether your solution is positioned within the ecosystem where those conversations are taking place.

The vendors experiencing the strongest growth understand this principle. Rather than trying to create demand on their own, they place themselves at the centre of an ecosystem that already has momentum.

Another important reason ecosystems work so well is trust.

Trust remains one of the biggest factors influencing purchasing decisions. A prospect may never have heard of your company. They may not be familiar with your solution or your brand. However, they trust their implementation partner. They trust their business adviser. They trust the Microsoft partner who has helped them successfully navigate previous technology investments.

When your solution is introduced by a trusted partner, everything changes. Customer confidence increases. Sales cycles often become shorter. Adoption rates improve. The perceived risk is reduced because the recommendation comes from a relationship that has already been established.

This is one of the most valuable benefits of ecosystem-led growth.

Trust scales through partnerships.

As we look across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, the opportunity for ISVs has never been greater. Digital transformation remains a priority for organizations of every size. Cloud adoption continues to accelerate. Businesses are actively seeking solutions that help them improve efficiency, gain insights from data, automate processes, and create competitive advantage.

At the same time, Africa is emerging as one of the most exciting opportunities within the broader EMEA region. Organizations across the continent are investing in modern business applications, cloud technologies, AI, and digital transformation initiatives. Yet many ISVs still overlook Africa when developing their international growth strategies.

That creates a significant opportunity for software vendors willing to think differently.

The companies that succeed in these markets will not necessarily be those with the largest budgets. They will be the organizations that build the strongest partnerships, understand local market dynamics, and leverage ecosystem relationships to create momentum.

Building an ecosystem, however, is not simply about recruiting as many partners as possible. Success comes from creating meaningful relationships and providing partners with the support they need to succeed. Partners need enablement, training, marketing support, sales engagement, and a clear understanding of how they can create value for their customers.

The most successful ISVs recognize that partner success and vendor success are inseparable.

When partners grow, the ecosystem grows.

When the ecosystem grows, customer success improves.

And when customer success improves, recurring revenue follows naturally.

This is also why distribution is playing an increasingly strategic role in the modern software industry. Today's distributors do far more than facilitate transactions. They help vendors recruit partners, accelerate onboarding, provide enablement, support marketplace strategies, and create scalable routes to market.

For ISVs looking to enter new territories, distribution can dramatically reduce the complexity and risk associated with expansion. Rather than spending years building infrastructure and relationships from scratch, vendors can leverage established networks and proven frameworks designed to accelerate growth.

As I look ahead to Directions EMEA 2026, I am excited about the conversations that will take place around innovation, market expansion, AI, Business Central, and ecosystem development. Most importantly, I look forward to meeting ISVs that are ready to think bigger about growth.

Not just growth through more salespeople.

Not just growth through more marketing.

But growth through stronger partnerships.

Growth through collaboration.

Growth through ecosystems.

The future belongs to software companies that understand they do not have to scale alone. The organizations that embrace partner-led growth, marketplace enablement, strategic distribution, and ecosystem thinking will be the ones that unlock the greatest opportunities across EMEA and Africa in the years ahead.
