From Blantyre to Maseru: The AI Conversation Has Changed Insights from Sage Customer Breakfasts in Malawi and Lesotho on How Business Leaders Are Preparing for the Next Era of Intelligent Business Applications

22 September 2026

Over the past few weeks, I had the privilege of engaging with business leaders, finance executives, operational managers, and technology decision-makers at Sage Customer Breakfast events in Malawi and Lesotho. Hosted in partnership with Sage, 4Sight, and our local partners, AccTech Malawi and AccTech Lesotho, these sessions provided customers with insight into Sage's product roadmap, showcased innovation around AI and automation, and explored how organisations can prepare for the next era of intelligent business applications.

These events also reinforced a broader trend that is becoming increasingly evident across the continent: the conversation around artificial intelligence has evolved significantly.

What made these engagements particularly valuable was not simply the technology demonstrations or product updates. It was the quality of the discussions that took place around the breakfast tables. Across both countries, business leaders were asking practical questions about productivity, growth, compliance, operational efficiency, and customer experience. The conversation was no longer about whether AI will have an impact on business. Instead, it centred on how organisations can adopt AI responsibly and effectively to achieve measurable business outcomes.

This shift reflects an important stage in the digital transformation journey. A few years ago, many organisations viewed AI as a future capability that would eventually become relevant. Today, it is increasingly being recognised as a business tool that can help address real challenges, improve decision-making, and create competitive advantage.

The Evolution of Business Applications

One of the key messages presented during the Sage roadmap sessions was that business applications are undergoing a significant transformation. Traditional ERP, payroll, finance, and business management systems have historically been used to record transactions and generate reports. While these capabilities remain essential, the next generation of business applications is becoming significantly more intelligent.

Sage's vision extends beyond individual products and towards a connected ecosystem built around the Sage Network, the Sage Data Platform, AI services, automation capabilities, business intelligence, and intelligent workflows. This architecture is designed to remove data silos, connect information across the organisation, and create a foundation for AI-powered decision-making.

For business leaders, this is an important development because it changes the role that technology plays within the organisation. Systems are no longer simply repositories of information. They are becoming active participants in helping organisations understand what is happening, identify opportunities, and make better decisions.

The ability to connect finance, payroll, operations, inventory, compliance, and customer information creates an environment where businesses can respond faster, plan more effectively, and gain greater visibility into their performance. Organisations that can harness connected data effectively will be far better positioned to navigate uncertainty and seize new opportunities.

From Data to Intelligence

Another recurring theme throughout our discussions was the growing importance of trusted data. Every organisation collects data, but not every organisation can transform that data into meaningful insight.

The success of AI initiatives depends heavily on the quality, accessibility, and connectivity of business information. Sage's platform strategy addresses this challenge by creating a connected environment where data can flow across applications while remaining secure, governed, and accessible to authorised users.

When organisations break down data silos, the opportunities become substantial. Financial performance can be analysed faster, operational bottlenecks can be identified earlier, and resource allocation decisions can be supported by real-time information. Management teams can move beyond static reports and access deeper insights into business performance.

Many of the business leaders we met in Malawi and Lesotho recognised that their digital transformation journey is not simply about implementing new technology. It is about creating a stronger foundation for insight-led decision-making that enables growth, resilience, and long-term success.

Where Sage and Microsoft Copilot Converge

Perhaps one of the most exciting discussions focused on the growing relationship between business applications and artificial intelligence.

Sage's roadmap demonstrates a clear commitment to AI-powered experiences, including Sage Copilot, intelligent reporting, automated workflows, AI-driven recommendations, and embedded business insights. These innovations are designed to help users interact with their systems in more intuitive and productive ways.

At the same time, Microsoft Copilot is transforming how employees work across productivity applications, collaboration platforms, and enterprise systems. Together, these technologies are creating an environment where information is easier to access, reports are easier to interpret, and decisions can be made with greater confidence.

Imagine a finance manager asking natural language questions about profitability, cash flow, or business performance and receiving meaningful, contextual answers in seconds. Imagine management reports that not only present information but also explain trends, identify risks, and provide recommendations. Imagine employees spending less time searching for information and more time acting on insights that drive business value.

This is the future that many organisations are beginning to explore, and it was clear from our discussions that there is significant interest in understanding how these capabilities can be applied within real-world business environments.

The Emergence of Agentic AI

Another topic that generated considerable interest during both events was Agentic AI.

While many organisations are becoming familiar with AI assistants that respond to questions and generate content, Agentic AI introduces a more advanced concept. Rather than simply providing information, AI agents can help automate activities, manage workflows, monitor business processes, identify exceptions, and support decision-making within controlled governance frameworks.

For organisations facing increasing pressure to improve efficiency and productivity, these capabilities present substantial opportunities. Agentic AI has the potential to reduce repetitive administrative work, accelerate response times, and allow employees to focus on higher-value activities that require human expertise, creativity, and judgement.

Importantly, the business leaders we engaged with understood that successful AI adoption requires more than technology. Governance, compliance, transparency, security, and human oversight must remain central to every implementation strategy.

The enthusiasm surrounding Agentic AI was therefore balanced with a practical understanding of the responsibilities that come with introducing these technologies into the workplace. The most successful organisations will be those that embrace innovation while maintaining trust, accountability, and sound governance practices.

Africa's Opportunity to Lead

One of the most encouraging aspects of the conversations in both Malawi and Lesotho was the confidence shown by business leaders in their ability to harness AI and intelligent business applications to drive growth, efficiency, and innovation.

There is a growing recognition that African organisations do not need to follow the traditional technology adoption pathways of the past. Cloud-based solutions, modern ERP platforms, AI-powered applications, and intelligent automation are enabling businesses to accelerate their digital transformation journeys and compete more effectively on a global stage.

The appetite for innovation is evident. Organisations are looking for ways to work smarter, improve customer service, enhance compliance, increase productivity, and drive sustainable growth. They are actively exploring how technology can help them achieve these objectives while creating stronger and more resilient businesses.

These conversations reinforced my belief that Africa is exceptionally well positioned to benefit from the next wave of digital transformation. The willingness to embrace new ideas, coupled with a strong focus on business outcomes, creates the ideal environment for organisations to unlock the value that AI and intelligent business applications can deliver.

Building the Future Together

As I reflect on the discussions that took place from Blantyre to Maseru, I am encouraged by the mindset of the leaders we met and the opportunities that lie ahead. The future of business applications is being shaped by connected platforms, trusted data, intelligent automation, embedded AI, and digital assistants that help people work more effectively and make better decisions.

What struck me most was not the interest in AI itself. It was the growing recognition that competitive advantage will increasingly come from how effectively organisations combine human expertise, trusted business applications, and intelligent digital assistants. The leaders we met in Malawi and Lesotho are not waiting for the future to arrive. They are already exploring how to build it.

At 4Sight, we are committed to helping organisations navigate this journey by connecting strategy, business applications, data, automation, and AI into practical solutions that deliver measurable outcomes.
